Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 17

Students enjoyed getting outside the classroom and learning about plants and different cultures. Students first went on some scavenger hunts through the Asian and Tropical Gardens and learned about different native plants from these areas. The Tropical Garden tour was close to home and a lot of the students liked exploring the natural habitat. Students were 100% engaged and active the entire day and it was centered about on learning and exploring which kept them thinking about plants, gardens, and sustainability all day. The students really enjoyed the Orchid Garden as well. Many students have never seen one before and it was a great first time experience learning about those plants and how important they are. Overall, the students really loved the trip and loved that it was not an indoor field trip but a trip that kept them outside, active and engaged.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this field trip will be to immerse students in the world of plants and botanicals that they might not the get the chance to learn and experience otherwise. The goal of the field trip is to allow students to use all senses in a natural world element while also learning at the same time.

What will be done with my students

At the Naples Botanical Garden, students will experience the "Tropical Topics" field trip. This is an immersive field trip where students learn about biodiversity, tropical ecosystems, and its implications on human populations. They will be able to explore the Lea Asian Garden as well as the Kapnick Caribbean Garden landscapes.

Benefits to my students

This field trip will help students learn outside the classroom. Topics we cover such as photosynthesis, biodiversity, invasive species, ecosystems, and energy transfer. Learning in an outdoor environment is beneficial to students. Providing these extra learning resources is beneficial to the student in many different ways. Professional, Deirdre Slattery (2001) states, “Being field-based, Outdoor Education provides immediacy, stimulus and curiosity, and direct access to the landscape itself, the teaching material. These advantages could be used to gain more meaning and interest from the places we visit, as well as enabling a different perspective on our activities in them” (p. 28).
