Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 400

This grant money was used to buy a World History Mini DBQ (Document Based Question) Binder.  Originally the grant was written for the purchase of a US History binder, but after we received the grant, a US History binder was brought to us by a former employee.  The great thing about this particular World History binder is that a number of the topics cover both US and World History content and will be utilized in both courses.

The World History Mini DBQ Binder that was purchased with this grant has greatly benefited the World History and US History students and teachers at Lely High School.  This binder (as well as all other Mini DBQ Binders) is an extremely versatile resource that allows teachers to use entire DBQ projects (12 projects/topics/units) that cover multiple standards and can take up to 4 days to teach, or customize any of the projects and create lessons that can be used for start-ups, a ten minute rotation resource, a full day activity, or anything else.  Not only is this resource versatile, but a great deal of the content in this binder is closely sligned to the World History and US History standards which makes planning and implementation very efficient.

This binder will mostly be used in ratational lessons and as individual projects.  The resource has been created in a way that students are required to be active and engaged learners.  The topics are also interesting and challenging.  For these reasons, among otheres, 96% of the students in World History and US History have communicated that they enjoy the activities teachers have createed for their rooms.  Consistently providing rigorous content that students enjoy is often difficult for teachers.  This resource has made a portion of their curriculum writing more efficient and effective.  Because all projects in the binder have a writing component, its use is a great way to integrate writing in the social studies curriculum.  On that note, our language arts teachers are very grateful as well.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To increase student achievement in United States History, as well as literacy at Lely High School.

What will be done with my students

Lessons from these binders will be utilized in United States History classrooms. Students will complete activities, answer Document-Based Questions (DBQs), and cite primary and secondary resources provided in each lesson. Each lesson is graded on either an informative or argumentative essay.

Benefits to my students

Students will not only benefit by learning United States History content that address the state standards, but will also strengthen their literacy and prepare them for meeting their reading and writing graduation requirements. The writing required in these lessons aligns with the FSA Writing examination.

One major initiative at Lely High School is increasing the integration of reading and writing across all content areas. These DBQs will be crucial to this process and its success.
