Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 150

Students were able to actually apply their knowledge of electricity to a more useful and applicable project than the usual, which is building circuits on a circuit board.  The circuit board is fine, but it is so technical that a lot of students don't really relate to it and end up, in my opinion, not getting a lot out of the project.  The only students who are really engaged are students who have a computer interest or a good engineering background/interest.   The "wall" that was funded by this grant took the lesson out of the abstract and students were able to see how electricity works in their own home.  Even students who were not interested in engineering or technical fields were engaged by the application to their own lives and the students who are interested in engineering were hands on- diving in to the activities.  I had to slow them down because they were so engaged and eager to learn!  This project was successful in getting students involved in and interested in how electricity works, which is a fundamental for this content area.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will be able to use the basic knowledge of electricity that they learn to actually test their skills in wiring different elements of an electrical wiring simulator.

What will be done with my students

Students will wire and test different components of an electrical system similar to residential housing, but safe. This is a project done after learning the basics of electricity and should be a fun incentive for them to learn.

Benefits to my students

One of my big pushes with my students is to get them to explore options using science in careers that would be potential matches for their skills. Electrician is always one i mention, but the students don't seem to know what an electrician does or believe this is something they can do. I think this lesson would inspire them to explore the field more.

Budget Narrative

This is a kit that has everything i need included. It includes 16 lesson plans and a way for students to safely assess their wiring abilities. It is reusable and all of my physical science and physics classes can benefit from it.
