The entire second grade at Eden Park Elementary really enjoyed the opportunity to learn directly about insects from insects because of the classroom grant provided. Each classroom was able to have their own butterfly kit and watch painted lady butterflies go through the process of metamorphosis from caterpillar to adult butterfly. This process greatly enhanced student learning about all insects as students worked through the insect adventures unit. One student commented that they never saw a chrysalis before and had no idea an insect could change so much while other students commented on the importance to taking care of the environment by saying, “We should have lots of flowers outside so that the butterflies have a habitat and food to eat.” Without the generosity of the community our students would not have been able to learn first hand about the nature world we all enjoy in southwest Florida.
