Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 17

The College Connection project encompassed a number of academic related aspects.  Soon after the postcards were mailed out, college information and promotional items began to pour in.  It took a lot of effort to redirect the students' excitement of opening the packages to see what had arrived to the learning that was presenting itself.  We put up a large US map and placed push pins on each home city of the responding universities.  Students were amazed to see the pins filling up the map.  They learned geography from this activity as well as analyzed and developed hypotheses in why most of the responding schools were from the east coast.

In early January when packets ceased arriving, students had a "business" meeting to discuss what to do with all of the promotional items we collected.   Most want to just divide it up and take it home, but others had a better idea of holding a fund raiser by sellilng to the entire student body.  This allowed us the opportunity to look at running a small business - setting prices, following school procedures, marketing and promoting, and handling of money.  Some funds were made that went into our emotional / behavior disorder unit account which will be spent on student supplies.  There were a few left over items, and students then showed their generosity by suggesting that the remaining items be given to teachers or students in need.

Overall, I am greatly pleased with the outcomes.  Students learned  how to write request. mail postcards, locate cities across the US, and run a small business.

What will be done with my students

Students will send post cards to 600 US colleges and universities asking for information and promotional materials from their institutions. it is projected that students will receive not only informational brochures but also t-shirts, pennants, and a host of other promotional items. All print materials received will be cataloged by state and placed in binders. This information will be made available to all students seeking information on various colleges and universities. All promotional items received will be put up for sale to the entire student body. This will be an opportunity for students to showoff their interests in various universities as well as be a fund raiser for the EBD unit.

Benefits to my students

This project will be carried out by students in our EBD (emotional / behavior disorders) unit. These students learn better when participating in hands-on projects. All aspects of this project will require students to be physically engaged in the activities. Skills to be worked on include but are not limited to:
* creating mailing labels - mail merge - technology
* writing the content of each post card
* pin pointing geographic location of responding
universities
* cataloging print materials alphabetically and by state
* completing district paperwork to collect funds
* marketing the nonprint items to be sold
* demonstrate customer service skills as they try to sell
items.
* collecting then depositing monies collected
* responding to writing prompts about the colleges that
responded and the project as a whole
* Collaborating with peers to determine how the funds are
spent.
