Technology can find “x” : Impact to My Classroom

Tamzon Reed-Hamilton

Project narrative:

With your generous donation, I was able to purchase 5 TI-84 Color graphing calculators. These calculators will be used by 5 – 10 students every class period, every day, for the next  4 or 5 years… That’s a lot of kids for a lot of years! Thank you so very much!

These calculators replaced the calculators that have finally broken down, eliminating the need for students to share. The difference that the color feature provides is amazing, when we are looking at more than one function at t time, the students will crowd around the students who have the color ones because the difference in the colors of the two functions allows them to clearly see the similarities, differences, and solutions. I’ve also noticed that the students using these calculators to explain their solutions have more confidence than before.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to slowly replace my classroom set of TI-84 graphing calculators. My current calculators are getting old and wearing out. I lost 5 calculators that I can no longer "fix" at the end of last year.

What will be done with my students

Students are assigned a calculator to use each day and are responsible for its care. They are also asked to check one out through the library or the Migrant Center to keep at home to complete homework and projects at home.
I teach Honors Algebra 2 and Honors Pre-Calculus. At this level of math, students struggle to understand "why" they are doing the math I am teaching them. These calculators allow my students to manipulate variables and see how the function is affected, and what those changes mean in real-world context!

Benefits to my students

Many students struggle with the abstractness of what "x" and "y" are in algebra; the Color Graphing calculators that I am seeking funding for will allow my students to "SEE" what these functions involving x and y look like, and what is happening with these functions while applying the math to solve real-world problems. Putting this technology in my students' hands encourages student engagement, deeper understanding, and an increase in retention rate!
Students are also encouraged to explore and learn about other functions. I have had many students amaze me at what they can make them do just by playing around. For example, I had one student play around with various Trigonometry functions and came up with a beautiful graph! When we got to the section to learn Trigonometry, that kid and many others who saw what he had graphed were already hooked!

Budget Narrative

Using Amazon to determine budget amounts, I found:
5 Calculators @ $131.90 each which comes to $659.50, but they are on sale right now, so there is a discount of $34.50 and no taxes. which gives me a grand total of $625.00
