Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 152

There are 9 classrooms on the 3rd grade team. All of the students read books within their lexile leveled range, and are able to take computerized tests on those books, through the Reading Counts program. Once a week the test reports are printed, and students with at least a 70% weekly test average are able to receive a charm for the week. This is a 10 week program. Students are motivated by the charms, and want to make sure they do their very best on the test in order to receive a passing score. This helps to build their love for reading and their reading comprehension.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to motivate and excite 3rd grade students into becoming more advanced readers that are able to show that they can successfully comprehend the books that they read. The students take a high-stake test at the end of the year titled the Florida Standards Assessment (FSA), and this comprehension reading incentive program will help the students towards the FSA.

What will be done with my students

This grant will be a reading incentive program to be used for the students in the entire third grade. There are 8 teachers that will have between 18-20 students in each classroom. The students will be earning charms to wear on a necklace as they successfully complete reading quizzes. There will be two ways that students can earn charms: I have a Cambridge class, which will consist of mostly advanced readers. To bring more rigor into their reading, I will introduce the Sunshine State Young Readers Awards Books (SSYRA). These are books that are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation. There are 15 books, and upon completing a book, the students will take a comprehension quiz on that book. After a successful completion of a quiz for a book, the students will receive a charm that is specifically matched to each book. Upon a successful completion of a quiz, the students will also have the opportunity to create a FlipGrid video to discuss the book. This is a video program that other students can view and comment on. However, at the same time, there will be an alternative charm program run in my classroom, and this program will be in the other 7 classrooms as well. Some students might not be able to successfully read a SSYRA book as it might be too advanced. This alternative program will be for students that need (or want) to read books that are not SSYRA books, and therefore these students can also earn a separate charm, with a weekly passing rate on any quizzes that they may take on their leveled books. This reading charm program is to excite and motivate the children to want to read...to like to read...and to actually read, but not only to read, to understand what they are reading!

Benefits to my students

Third grade is a high-stakes testing year. Sometime near the end of the year, students will take an English-Language Arts FSA. One large component of this test is that it assesses comprehension of reading passages. By getting students to read throughout the year, especially rigorous material, and to already be accustomed to being assessed on their reading, will help to give the students an advantage come testing time. An additional benefit to students is that students will enjoy reading, and will look forward to future reading as well!

Budget Narrative

My budget is a request for funds to fulfill donations for the 8 teachers and their students on my third grade team. I am requesting $745.05 to be able to purchase a class set of SSYRA books, a class set of SSYRA charms which are 15 different sets of 25. This money will also be to purchase 10 other sets of 25 charms for each of the eight classrooms, as well as a 8 sets of 25 necklaces for eight classrooms.
