The goal of this project at Golden Gate Elementary(GGE) is to provide a unique experience and opportunity for our students to develop new skills and explore different careers. In a school that has 93% of students classified as economically needy, it is important to us to expose our students to local experiences, that they may not otherwise have an opportunity to experience.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 29

This project was an amazing success! It was a unique experience for our students, and it was a true partnership with our community. A special thank you to WINGS of Naples, for making the trip possible with their generous grant, and a special thank you to the Apple Store "Geniuses" and California Pizza Kitchen for making it an unforgettable experience for our students.

The Golden Gate Elementary Students worked in teams to preplan a skit/movie, then they worked with Apple Store "Geniuses" to film their skits, enhance them with technology, edit them and present them to their classmates. Students were able to use the most updated technology and learn new skills. The students were given the run of the Apple Store; they were encouraged to think outside the box, as well as, explore and express their creativity. They left the Apple Store with their finished video on a flash drive bracelet to share with family and friends, as well as, skills and memories to last a lifetime.

The students were then welcomed into California Pizza Kitchen, where they were able to tour the restaurant and make their own pizzas. This opportunity gave them a chance to see behind the scenes of a working restaurant, they were also introduced to many people who shared their customer service skills, as well as, their culinary talents. For the students at Golden Gate Elementary, this provided another special opportunity as a number of them had never eaten in a sit down restaurant prior to this experience.  We are so grateful to the community groups and businesses that support our students and recognize the importance of unique and special opportunities for learning.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project at Golden Gate Elementary(GGE) is to provide a unique experience and opportunity for our students to develop new skills and explore different careers. In a school that has 93% of students classified as economically needy, it is important to us to expose our students to local experiences, that they may not otherwise have an opportunity to experience.

What will be done with my students

The National Elementary Honor Society(NEHS) students in 4th and 5th grades will take a field trip to the Waterside Shops. They will first attend a workshop at the Apple Store to learn about new technology, and work together to create a project utilizing the skills that they learned. The students will then go to the California Pizza Kitchen where they will tour the restaurant, learn a bit about this service industry and get a chance to make their own pizzas.

Benefits to my students

This field trip, provides a special opportunity for our NEHS students, to participate in a unique learning experience. This field trip, will not only introduce our students to the Apple Store "Geniuses" and teach them skills in the area of technology, it will also give students exposure to different career opportunities such as culinary, restaurant management and customer service.
