Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 230

The “WINGS” Collier-Lee Honor Flight Grant was able to impact approximately 230 students, since this grant spanned 2 school years we were able to impact more students.  Participation in the Collier-Lee Honor Flight has had so many positive outcomes for so many of our students. We initially were able to send one student in October 2018 with one guardian and then sent three more students and one teacher in May 2019. For the October Honor Flight we had all (130) of the Cadet’s write letters to the veterans on that flight and again wrote over 130 letters to the veterans on the flight in May assisting our students in writing across all curriculums.  The Cadets who traveled on the flight completed reflection logs so they could share their experiences with their peers. The Cadets and teacher who traveled to Washington D.C. have developed friendships with their veterans that have continued even after the amazing day the two shared together. Our JROTC Program has invited all four veterans to attend our Military Ball so they can share the evening of traditions with the Cadet’s next school year so we can continue to emphasize how important “the Greatest Generation” really was to shaping our world today.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To send four members of the GGHS Army JROTC on Collier County Honor Flights to continue to impress upon the youth the immense impact of this nations veterans on how our country was shaped and the dedication and sacrifice that was shown.

What will be done with my students

Students will be assigned to each veteran. Students will spend two days conducting meet & greet events with a World War I through Vietnam Veteran and then on the scheduled day travel to Washington D.C. and tour the military memorials.

From the moment the veterans are in our hands until we return them to their loved ones in the evening, Sudents/guardians will be asked to treat these heroes as if they are family and ensure that every veteran has a safe, memorable, and rewarding experience. Guardians are volunteers and are expected to pay for their trip. The cost for a Guardian to take the trip is approximately $450, but may vary, depending upon flight accommodations.

Benefits to my students

Students will be able to connect with individuals/veterans who helped shaped the world into the place it is today. The students will create a reflection log of their experience which will be showcased in our JROTC Hallway for viewing
