Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 99

The Passionate Poets grant that we recieved impacted 99 third grade students at Poinciana Elementary School!  The orginal grant was written for 95 students, but our population grew by four students in the second semester.  This was the best year yet for our spring poetry project!  The enthusiasm was actually palpable among the students.  From their creative use of words in their poems to the gorgeous and detailed illustrations the students made sure their books were perfect for their mothers.  They really enjoyed using the thesarus to come up with alternate and powerful words.  Writing the "meet the author" page at the end was another part they really enjoyed and were creative with in writing.  It was a perfect culmination of our language learning experienced this year.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to foster a passion for poetry in students by giving them an opportunity to write and publish poetry and to give the poetry as a gift to their mother (or special female relative) for Mother's Day.

What will be done with my students

Students will receive instruction in the different types of poetry in our Spring Poetry Unit and then will be given the opportunity to write, edit and publish their poems in a hardback book that they can illustrate and give to their mother (or special female relative) for Mother's Day.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of allowing students to learn, write, edit, publish and illustrate their poetry is that they take ownership in the final product. They are engaged and invested because it is a gift for a loved one. Taking them through the writing process and allowing them to create a finished product allows the students to process their knowledge about poetry in a way that they will remember. It gives them ownership and pride. I have asked for enough books that our entire third grade at Poinciana will be able to participate and benefit. This activity is excellent because it can easily be differentiated for English Language Learners and our ESE students.
