Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 1800

The literary magazine got off to a rather rocky start in terms of organization and student leadership partly due to the effects of Hurricane Irma which wiped out most of the month of September. Additionally, GGHS had not produced a literary magazine in ten years so it was like starting entirely from scratch. While I initially envisioned a "rebirth" of the old magazine which was primarily comprised of poetry and fiction, the direction in which the student editor and contributors chose to take the magazine was far more relevant to the world in which they live and the issues that are currently impacting students at GGHS and of concern to high school students nationwide. The format chosen for the magazine was that of a news magazine with articles, interviews and poetry centered upon tough issues such as immigration and violence while also celebrating the many "golden" moments that are taking place at GGHS.

Like the mythical phoenix, the literary magazine has been "reborn" from the ashes of its predecessor into a glorious new creation.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To re-establish a student literary magazine at Golden Gate High School. Golden Gate High School's literary magazine has been dormant for the past eight years and it's time for a revival!

What will be done with my students

The involvement of students at GGHS will be two-fold:

EDITORIAL & PRODUCTION STAFF: There will be a core group of students who comprise the Literary Magazine Club who, in addition to contributing their writing to the magazine, will be engaged in the editing, layout and production of the magazine.

CONTRIBUTORS: All students at GGHS may contribute their original writing to the magazine.

Benefits to my students

The school literary magazine will provide Golden Gate High School students with an outlet for creative expression where they can see their words in print and develop confidence in their ideas. The students will also have the opportunity to hone their writing skills in a supportive environment though their interaction with student editors.

The Florida Standards align with the purpose of this project.

LAFS.1112.W.1.3 Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.

LAFS.1112.W.2.6 Use technology, including the Internet, to produce, publish, and update individual or shared writing products in response to ongoing feedback,
including new arguments or information,

LAFS.1112.W.4.10 Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks, purposes, and audiences.

Budget Narrative

Startup funds will be needed to produce the inaugural edition of the magazine. However, the financial goal of the club is to then be self-funding by producing a quality magazine that students could purchase at a minimal cost which would fund future editions of the magazine. Students would be involved not only in the writing, editing and design of the magazine but also the production, advertisement and sale of the magazine.
