Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 240

Students in 6th Grade at Corkscrew Middle School had a fun time developing their cooperative learning, problem solving, and presentation skills while making paper slide videos. Throughout this school year, students had different opportunities to choose topics from our curriculum from which to make their paper slides, including the water cycle, layers of the Earth's atmosphere, chemical vs. physical weathering, fossil fuels, and alternative energies, to name just a few. They started the process by further researching their topics in teams of 3-4. Next, they worked on improving their writing skills by taking their notes and using them to write precise scripts which would be read aloud. Students enjoyed showing off their creativity and artistry in their drawings for the slides. Finally, when all was completed, they rehearsed and polished their presentations before recording using iPads. This entire process allowed teams of students to become more engaged in their learning. What sixth grader doesn't enjoy working with their classmates, drawing, and using iPads to show off what they know? To top it off, all of the students were very excited to see their finished videos as they were viewed by their classmates. 6th grade students are very social and enjoy working in groups. This project gave them the opportunity to learn how to develop much needed cooperative learning skills while learning more about Earth & Space Science topics and having a bit of fun. This project provided me the opportunity to see students shine in their own areas of expertise: planning/organizing, communicating, researching, writing, illustrating, reading aloud, and filming/technology. Thank you again for supporting my project!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this project is to provide Grade 6 students at CMS the opportunity to develop their cooperative learning, problem solving, and presentation skills. Students will become more engaged as they showcase their knowledge on a variety of science topics by creating Paper Slides.

What will be done with my students

Paper Slides are a creative way of presenting information using words and images placed on pieces of paper which are shown while reading a written script and recorded using a digital camera or mobile phone. Working in small groups, students will write a 2-3-minute script based on the content they need to present. Students will then create the Paper Slides. Each slide uses text and images to reinforce the main message of the paper slide presentation. The series of paper slides are then stacked together in order, and as the script is being read, students will flip through each slide while recording. The finished product can then be viewed by classmates.

Benefits to my students

Students will learn to plan and design, work cooperatively, and develop problem solving skills. Since many different roles are needed for completion of this type of project, students will be able to develop different skills within their group each time: as a researcher, writer, artist, camera operator, and reader. This type of project does not have any student faces shown – hands and voice only, so shy students can have an opportunity to shine as well!
