Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 100

The goal of “Teach Me through Grammar Tales” was to introduce and reinforce the essential grammar and writing skills of nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, capitalization, commas, quotation marks, sentence structure, and proofreading. As the students read the ten different stories, my English language learners gained a greater understanding of the structure of the English language. Since the books were humorous, the student loved reading them.  After reading the first one, they were excited and begged to read the others. As we continued to read the rhyming stories aloud, students worked on their fluency so that the stories actually rhymed. We discussed the topics such as capitalization, commas, quotation marks, sentence structure, and proofreading making sure each student understood the concept and skill.  In the small group setting, the students felt at ease and asked many questions as they tried to utilize that particular skill.  I reinforced the new knowledge by using the information in sentences verbally and then in written form. Finally, the students created flipbooks and added each topic to a separate page. These flipbooks became their personal possession, a sort of reference guide that they could continue to use. On each page we defined the topics, gave many examples, and then each student created their own examples. This enabled students to improve their writing skills. As the students became more secure in their knowledge, their speech and their written expression improved. This grant allowed our students to learn grammar in a fun way!  It was a wonderful way to help children learn and become more confident with the English language while speaking and writing. We want to thank Suncoast Credit Union for funding “Teach Me through Grammar Tales” and supporting the students at Calusa Park Elementary,

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of “Teach Me through Grammar Tales” is to introduce and reinforce the essential grammar and writing skills of nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, capitalization, commas, quotation marks, sentence structure, and proofreading. As the students read the ten different stories, my English language learners will gain a greater understanding of writing and the structure of the English language.

What will be done with my students

By implementing this set of ten humorous storybooks throughout my reading groups, the students will be introduced to nouns, verbs, adjectives, and pronouns. They will also learn about capitalization, commas, quotation marks, sentence structure and the hardest skill for most elementary students, proofreading. As we read each rhyming story aloud, we will work on fluency so the story’s rhyme and rhythm are not lost. Once we’ve read the story, we will discuss its topic, making sure each child understands the concepts provided. When they are comfortable with the concept, each student will create their own flipbook to include the topic on its labeled page with examples of the concept. Students will demonstrate whether they can apply this new concept and skill. This will lend itself to new levels of written expression.

Benefits to my students

The set of Grammar Tales will bring many benefits to my students. First, we will read the tale and see it illustrated on the pages. Reading these books will improve the student’s fluency through the rhythm and rhyme, and increase the student's vocabulary. They will be introduced to the different concepts through text and colored pictures. Then I will reinforce the parts of speech or writing skills by using them within our discussions, as well as using them in sentences verbally and finally in written form. Students feel at ease when they are in a small group setting, so during this time students may ask questions and try to “play” with the concepts. “Grammar Tales" will increase students’ understanding of everyday grammar and improve their writing skills. These stories will make learning grammar fun! My students will be engaged and love these read-aloud stories that teach the parts of speech. What a great way to help children learn and become strong, confident writers!

Budget Narrative

I am a resource teacher for English Language Learner at Calusa Park Elementary. I service many students in different grade levels. Last year I helped over one hundred students and shared my resources with the third, fourth, and fifth grade teachers. The 7 sets of “Grammar Tales" will become a resource for our school this year and for many years to come. Supporting this request will help hundreds of students over time. Thank you so much for considering my grant and supporting the students of Collier County.
