Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 50

By using our new measuring set 50 students were able to use hands-on math to convert cups to pints, pints to quarts, quarts to gallons, etc. Students enjoyed pouring liquids into the containers and comparing measurements. Students were able to see first hand how 2 cups were equivalent to 1 pint and then pour the 2 pints into the 1 quart container.  The measurement set had both customary and metric measurements inscribed on the easy-to-handle plastic containers. Our fourth grade learning goal in our Measurement Unit includes students being able to express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit and be able to solve measurement word problems involving the four operations. Students are also able to use a Reference Sheet to assist in their conversion problems. As useful as the Reference Sheet is, I feel having the students actually use the measurement containers to solve problems proved to be beneficial for long-term memory. Research shows that students retain 80% of what they actually do, as opposed to just hearing or seeing the content. Thank you for improving my student learning a great deal by providing them with hands-on opportunities to master content!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I am requesting the purchase of a classroom measuring set to provide hands-on experiences for my students in the mathematical area of measurement and conversions.

What will be done with my students

Kinesthetic learning is the type of learning that students will most effectively acquire, mostly because they will have hands-on experience. Students will be able to interact with real objects to explore using various units of measurement. This will bring the math content more to life for my students and create a sense of excitement as they take a break from the routine class activities. These real-life materials, which will be permanently integrated into the curriculum, embody true applications of the math content being taught. Students will be solving word problems, following instructions, and understanding and using mathematical vocabulary correctly, all in a collaborative learning environment.

Benefits to my students

Students will be highly engaged as they have "hands-on" practice measuring customary capacities and using metric conversions. Students will be able to learn measurement equivalents as they explore and compare various units of measurement. Using realia such as a measuring set for conversions will generate interest and help create an atmosphere conducive to learning.

Budget Narrative

This deluxe set is the perfect sized classroom set for learning measurement equivalents. Students practice customary capacities, liquid measurement and metric conversions with suggested activities included. Made of durable plastic, each piece is clearly marked to provide years of use. Includes Teacher's Guide. Set includes: Liquid Measuring: cup: (8oz/250ml), pint: (16oz/500ml), quart: (32oz/1000ml); Standard Spoons: 1/4, 1/2, 1 teaspoon, 1/2, 1 tablespoon; Standard Cups: 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, 1; Measuring Jars: gill, pint, quart, half-gallon, gallon (metric 100ml-3000ml)
