I am a reading intervention teacher for grades K-5 at Pinecrest Elementary. The goal of this grant is to help my struggling primary readers develop their reading skills by individualizing their instruction. The materials focus primarily on phonics and decoding strategies that my students need. The materials are exciting and engaging while focusing on the Florida Standards for language arts. It is essential to have hands on, stimulating materials when you are working with students who have not been successful with learning to read. Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 92

The materials I received for the “Just for Me!” grant were excellent for helping me to individualize, motivate and engage my reading resource students with their phonics.    I was able to provide differentiated materials within my small groups.  The reading i-ready scores improved greatly in the phonics area.  Especially engaging were the word building boards for blends, digraphs, short vowels and long vowels.  When you teach struggling readers, they often have low self-esteems and are not motivated.  These materials were exciting to use.  My students were so excited to use them.  The activities reinforced skills that are essential for reading.

I was also able to use these materials as a small center in my afterschool program here at Pinecrest.  I teach Immokalee Readers, an afterschool program for struggling readers, and these 17 students were able to benefit from this grant along with the 75 reading resource students.  These second graders really enjoyed the Fluency & Comprehension Partner Scripts.  The excitement in their voices as they read these scripts was so wonderful to hear.  These cards brought the reading down to their level yet didn’t seem “babyish” to them.  They loved working with partners with these cards.

Thank you for the grant!  It was wonderful to have such engaging materials that focused on the basic skills needed for reading!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

I am a reading intervention teacher for grades K-5 at Pinecrest Elementary. The goal of this grant is to help my struggling primary readers develop their reading skills by individualizing their instruction. It is essential to have hands on, stimulating materials when you are working with students who have not been successful with learning to read. These materials will help us reach all of our students at Pinecrest.

What will be done with my students

I would be using these materials throughout the year. I will be one of six reading resource teachers in a classroom so my actual area is small. I teach 4-6 students at a time. These materials, will allow me to work with my small group at my kidney table. The small group table top easel will allow me to present material to my groups which consist of 4-6 students. The double-sided wipe and write magnetic easel will be perfect for two students to work at the table on different activities. The various word building boards are ideal for differentiating instruction. The puzzles and activities for sight words are a fun way to help these young readers master their sight words. All of these materials will help me to move students ahead from whatever level they are on. Students, especially young students, progress quickly when you can individualize their instruction!

Benefits to my students

The benefits are enormous! 99.7% of our students are on Free/Reduced Lunch (Poverty level), 88.7% are from Non-English Speaking Households, and 46.5% are Migrant. My students are 1-3 years below grade level so it is essential to close the gap now. These materials will motivate and engage them while addressing the standards they need to master in order to improve their reading level. Having different materials than their regular classroom helps with the engagement. These materials will help to develop our young readers so they are motivated and prepared for our intermediate grades.
