Original Grant Overview

Goal

Our goal is to buy new and updated books for our resource room so teachers can check the books out and use them in guided reading (small group instruction) with their students.

What will be done with my students

Guided reading is a special and exciting part of the day for our students. They work at a table with a couple of other students and the teacher. The students love the individualized attention they get when they're with the teacher and often bring stories to share with them about what they did the night before or over the weekend.
Guided reading is a time when teachers can narrow in on a specific skill a small group of children need help with and really make sure that each child is understanding what is being taught in the classroom. Skills taught could be anything from sounding out words, working on sight words, figuring out how to determine the main idea of the text or a story to learning how to tackle multi-syllabic words for the first time.
Our reading resource room is where the teachers go to get the books they need for guided reading time. The books are all specifically leveled and organized by level so teachers know what area of the room they need to go towards to get the right leveled book for each of their groups. Books are bought and stored in sets of six so each student in the group has their own book to put their hands on and use their finger to follow along with. The resource room houses books of each level (A-V) in fiction and non-fiction and of many different genres (fantasy, folktale, biography, historical fiction). We like to continually update the reading resource room as history unfolds (new Presidents elected) and science topics (such as Pluto being called a dwarf planet) change.
Our reading resource room is in need of an overhaul so teachers can continue to provide our students with the interventions and enrichment they need to grow.

Benefits to my students

Students getting their hands on books is the biggest benefit to getting new books for our reading resource room. Not just any books but books that they work on with their teachers and a few classmates. Books they can connect with and share that connection with their small group.
Guided reading is pivotal part of our day and it is so important that we have exactly the right materials to make the most out of our time with our students.
Students reading levels, reading fluency and understanding of Florida Standards will all increase because of the instruction students receive in guided reading.

Budget Narrative

This grant will benefit every student at Avalon Elementary in Kindergarten through fifth grade this year and for years to come. The books will remain in the reading resource room for years for teachers to check out and use with their students.
Our reading coach (Coleen Size) with a group of teachers will determine where our biggest need is in the reading resource room and order the books needed.
