To provide quality solo and chamber ensemble music for students to perform for individual and small group development. We need new sheet music for students to play. The music must be from a list of titles provided by the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA). GGMS currently has very little music that is acceptable for students to perform. We need to increase our library so that more students can benefit from this important experience.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 120

I used the funds from this grant to purchase music for my students to perform at Solo and Ensemble assment and at our annual concert band Music Performance Assessment (MPA).   As a result of having a library of music to choose from, we had a record number of students perform solos for an adjudicator.  We had over 30 students participate in solo and ensemble and 27 of them recieved a SUPERIOR rating!  I only expect that number to grow in the years to come and we now have the music to support that growth.  Performing a solo is one of the best ways to develop individual musicianship. Having so many students participate in this event not only gives them individual confidence, but it makes our large ensembles stronger as well.

115 students participated in concert band MPA.  I purchased music for these ensemble that was suited to their strengths but also stretched them to enhance areas of weakness.  The Intermediate band recieved a rating of EXCELLENT from the judging panel, and the Symphonic band recieved SUPERIOR!  This was the first year we were able to have both bands participate in this event. Our Jazz ensemble also recieved a SUPERIOR rating at their assessment performance.  As a result of this grant, I was able to provide all ensembles with the appropriate level music for their stage of development as musicians.

This year was one of remarkable achievement for the GGMS band, thanks in large part to the generosity of the Education Foundation.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide quality solo and chamber ensemble music for students to perform for individual and small group development. We need new sheet music for students to play. The music must be from a list of titles provided by the Florida Bandmasters Association (FBA). GGMS currently has very little music that is acceptable for students to perform. We need to increase our library so that more students can benefit from this important experience.

What will be done with my students

Students will participate in the annual Solo and Ensemble festival sponsored by FBA. They will perform solos and in small groups. Students will have the opportunity to be evaluated and coached by leading professionals on their instrument. Some of the students will also have the opportunity to perform their solo and ensemble selections at our spring concert for friends and family! Last year we had 20 students participate and 16 of them earned a superior rating! I would like to extend this opportunity to all of the band students at Golden Gate Middle.

Benefits to my students

Students who participate in solo and ensemble have the opportunity to grow in a number of ways. They develop characteristic tone quality, rhythmic sensibility and musicianship on their instrument, but also gain a higher level of confidence. Practicing a solo and performing it live with a piano accompanist for a professional musician/educator is a daunting task for a young musician. They learn to conquer stage fright and gain a confidence that not only helps them in the music classroom, but in every other area.

Budget Narrative

Several different solo titles of varying difficulty must be purchased for each instrument. Ensemble titles must be purchased for different combinations of instruments (brass trios, quartets, quintets, etc). These pieces range in price from $5.00 to $25.00 depending on the instrumentation.
$800 will allow the purchase of several titles for each instrument and ensemble combination.

The All-state method books are published books for each instrument that the All-State audition music is selected from. In order for students to audition for this prestigious group, they must have access to the required music. $300.00 will allow me to purchase the required books for each instrument.
