In Career and Technical Education, our goal is that students will be future ready. We want our CTE students to be ready with the content skills and the foundational job skills that will help them succeed. It is essential that our students interact with health care professionals to help them prepare for their future careers. I will invite many guest speakers to come into the classroom. However, there are two problems with having guest speakers: 1) they can seldom take time from their busy schedules to spend an entire day to speak to all my classes, and 2) when we try to use our smartphones or iPads to record their visits for other classes to view, the quality (especially sound quality) is not good. The Swivl technology provides high quality audio and video recording which solves this problem. The Swivl offers several other benefits to the students. In order to develop students' foundational job skills, we can record student presentations in order to allow students to reflect on how to improve their foundational job skills and to provide high quality evidence for their digital portfolios.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 200

With the Swivl technology, my students benefitted in several ways. First, I was able to record Guest Speakers who came to visit my Medical Academy students. For example, Collette Krupp, an Occupational Therapist from Florida Gulf Coast University came to talk with my students about her career. She was only able to come for one period, so I used the Swivl technology to record her talk. Because the Swivl comes with a microphone that speakers wear, the audio is excellent. Further, I don't have to worry about being the videographer because the Swivl robot tracks the speaker as she moves around the room. I can then interact with the speaker and my students. The video uploads quickly to Swivl.com. Once it's uploaded, I can upload the video to the CCPS's Kaltura media storage site. It's a simple process to share the video with students in other classes. I've also used the Swivl technology to flip my classroom by recording my mini-lecture with video. I post the video in ANGEL and ask my students to watch it to prepare for class the next day. Finally, I used the Swivl technolgoy to record student presentations. Because the Swivl comes with 4 "markers" each student can wear a marker and the audio/video recording is superb! I look forward to finding more ways to use this amazing technology. Thank you Suncoast Schools Credit Union and License Plates for Learning!

Here's a link to a mini-lecture that I flipped earlier this year.

Here's a link to a visit by Laura Rosen, Community Relations Manager for the Community Blood Center. She came to talk to students about how to hold a blood drive.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

What will be done with my students

I plan to use this technology with my CTE students in several ways:
1) Record visits from guest speakers with high quality audio and video.
2) Record student presentations with high quality audio and video
3) Record lessons for students to view later (a "flipped classroom" practice)
4) Record lessons for self-assessment of my own teaching practices.

There are many other possible uses for this technology that will benefit students. For more information and to see videos of this technology in action, please go to Swivl.com.

Benefits to my students

With the Swivl technology, I will be able to obtain high quality video and audio recordings of guest speakers. Most guest speakers are not able to stay an entire school day to speak with students. With this technology, I can obtain high quality audio and video recordings of guest speakers and make the recording available for all my students. The Swivl robot tracks the speaker as he/she moves around the classroom. The speaker wears a mini-microphone/marker which the Swivl robot tracks and allows high quality audio recordings. No longer do I need to run the camera myself (or ask a student to run the equipment).

With the Swivl technology, I will be able to obtain high quality audio and video recordings of student presentations. These recordings will help students develop their foundational job skills and will be placed in their digital portfolios.

With the Swivl technology, I will be able to record a lesson and have it available for students to view. This "Flipped Classroom" model allows students to view a lesson at home, and then come to class prepared to participate in real-world projects. The recordings also make it easy for students who are absent to view lessons they missed.

With the Swivl technology, I will be able to obtain high quality recordings of my lessons to use for self-reflection on my teaching practices. My students will benefit when I improve my teaching!

Budget Narrative

The C-5 Model Swivl comes with 5 markers (microphones) that I can use to obtain high quality audio recordings of up to 4 people at the same time (for example, 4 students working as a team during a presentation). I will use my own iPad as the recording device. The Swivl can be used with other tablets, too. The Swivl model comes with the cloud-based software platform that allows students and teachers to create and edit their own video recordings. The wide angle lens allows viewing of the entire classroom, while the stand will supply the support for the Swivl. All items will be purchased from Swivl.com.
