Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 300

Although quarters can be lusterous (shiny) and malleable (bendable), so can the equipment we used to try to make Florida Quarter Rings.  This lab was loud and disturbed the teacher and student below us, so we had to move it outside.  The quarters got stuck and broke the 9 piece die punch set, the mandrel was dented, one of my large classroom heavy duty files was snapped in half.

I do not recommend this lab to other teachers and will not repeat this myself.  It is amazing to see on a video and perhaps a Construction Teacher would have better luck with a laboratory project of this nature.  I have been wanting to do this lab for years and would like to thank those who funded it.

The students learned that metal was malleable in a way they will never forget.  Thank you.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To provide the students with a hands-on experience they will never forget. While learning about the physical properties of metals, students will be given the opportunity to make a ring out of a quarter that they can keep.

What will be done with my students

Students will use a die set to place a hole in the center of a metal disk.

Then the students will hammer the disc down a jeweler's mandrel using a 3/4" Schedule 40 PVC Pipe to personally experience the malleability of metals.

Finally they will sand and polish their ring before wearing it.

Follow-Up: Students will study the chemical and physical properties of metals verses nonmetals after completing this memorable lab in class.

Benefits to my students

Students will personally learn that metals are malleable and lustrous and they will use that knowledge to make a family keepsake.
