The goal is to empower my students' pursuit of life-long learning and to inspire them to shape and reinvent their world through designing, creating codes and building. The students will use their problem solving and critical thinking skills to independently or collaboratively build a variety of projects at multiple levels of difficulty. It is my goal to make learning fun and get the students excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 40

The impact of this grant on my students has been incredredible! It has opened their eyes to a whole new world of thinking and has given them a different perspective that they had not even thought existed. This grant has empowered them to really think "outside" the box. They are becoming problem-solvers, and critical thinkers and they are using their collaborative skills to work together to come up with a plan for decision making. They understand that mistakes are a part of learning and its a way of readjusting what we do and think. Bringing in the Robotics and coding into second grade has cause my second graders to think of myselves as engineers and scientists as they learn to use the codes to program and make the algorithmns for the Robots. This hands on approach has reached so every student in a way that has been fun and engaging. They have used not on STEM skills but social skills as well as they worked in teams and reflected on their learning. This grant has really jump-started future engineers and scientist.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to empower my students' pursuit of life-long learning and to inspire them to shape and reinvent their world through designing, creating codes and building. The students will use their problem solving and critical thinking skills to independently or collaboratively build a variety of projects at multiple levels of difficulty. It is my goal to make learning fun and get the students excited about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)!

What will be done with my students

The students will be introduced to a robotics kit called Pi-Bot.
The Pi-Bot kit includes everything students need to jump-start an engineering interest — a gearbox, motors, sensors, an Arduino-compatible controller called the STEM Board, wires, tools, and a novel Pi-shaped chassis. This kit will help the students learn every aspect of robotics from assembling the gears to programming the software, using real-world electronic components and software. The students will be learning through an approach called Guided Discovery. Guided Discovery is an effective approach that provides an excellent framework for learn-by-doing. Guided Discovery utilizes an authentic context in which the problems are presented in certain sequence and choices that enables the learner to reach an outcome. Learning occurs as the user goes through various scenarios and is guided to discover principles, and develop critical competencies. Information and reference modules are presented in context when required or requested. Mistakes can be made and the resulting scenario will allow the user to make decisions. Learning still occurs if a user takes a wrong path all the way through. Thus, learning becomes an experience and not blindly following a set of rules, or learning by rote. With Guided Discovery Approach, making mistakes are an integral part of the learning process. Students are learning to reflect on their mistakes and learn from them.
