Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 75

These engaging, updated, and relevant materials allow students to immerse themselves in the research process on an academic topic of their choice which reflects their interest. Students nurture an awareness of, and respect for, the diversity of perspectives on global issues.  By providing opportunities to exercise higher-order thinking skills of anlaysis, synthesis, and evaluation, the resources encourage students' independent learning skills in preparation for higher eudcation.  The anthologies purchased from the Global Viewpoints series expose students to various contemporary views on economic, ethical, envionmental, technological, political, and cultural issues of global significance.

After evaluating and synthesizing alternative perspectives and interpretations, students offer a critical view of the global perspectives and reach a personal, supported judgment in a 4,500 to 5,000-word essay.  They reflect on the scope and nature of their research report and the reasons why their personal viewpoints of the issue may have changed during the research process.  Students present a justification of their research findings to a panel of faculty and community members through the Collier County Public Schools Advanced Studies Laureate Program.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to provide engaging, updated, and relevant resources on current global issues for the Advanced Studies Laureate students at Naples High School.

What will be done with my students

Students will focus their individual research on identifying and exploring the context and basis of the arguments from different global perspectives. They will select and analyze appropriate evidence from a range of source material. After evaluating and synthesizing alternative perspectives and interpretations, students will offer a critical view of the global perspectives and reach a personal, supported judgment in a 4,500 to 5,000-word essay. They will reflect on the scope and nature of their own research report and the reasons why their personal viewpoints of the issue may have changed during the research process. Students will then present a justification of their research findings to a panel of faculty and community members.

Benefits to my students

Students will nurture an awareness of, and respect for, the diversity of perspectives on global issues. Engaging, updated, and relevant materials will allow students to immerse themselves in the research process on an academic topic of their choice which reflects their own interest. By providing opportunities to exercise higher-order thinking skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, the resources will encourage students' development of independent learning skills in preparation for study in higher education and lifelong learning. At the end of each school year, students always comment that the Laureate process is one of the most rewarding experiences in high school; they feel well-prepared for university-level courses because of the research skills learned in this course.

Budget Narrative

Anthologies will be purchased from the Global Viewpoints series in order to expose students to various contemporary views on economic, ethical, environmental, technological, political, and cultural issues of global significance. These books have been selected from topics which the students have expressed strong interest and are beginning to research.
