Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 115

Thanks to our wonderful donor we were able to purchase a hardbound blank book used for publishing for the entire third grade at Poinciana Elementary School.  The books are part of our Spring Poetry unit and after the students publish their poetry in them we wrap them and they become a gift for their moms for Mother’s Day!  With our population being around 75% free and reduced lunch this is a gift they might not otherwise have to give.

The books generate excitement and give our students a purpose to their writing.  They’re so much more invested in their writing knowing that they have a chance to actually publish their own book and knowing that they are gifting those books to their mom.  This project touches on several of our writing standards in third grade but it also allows the students freedom to be creative.  We reviewed several poems that they learned how to write earlier in the year, then we also introduced them to several new poems.  The new poems were fun for them and we included rebus and shape poems, as well as, using a word cloud to describe yourself.  It was so neat to see how they described themselves with the word clouds!  They used such positive words like talented, lovely, remarkable, and imaginative to describe themselves.   I was so proud that they have such a positive self-image!  This is one of my very favorite activities and I am so thankful the Champions for Learning and our donor made it possible!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal is to foster a passion for poetry in students by giving them an opportunity to write and publish poetry and to give the poetry as a gift to their mother (or special female relative) for Mother's Day.

What will be done with my students

Students will receive instruction in the different types of poetry in our Spring Poetry Unit and then will be given the opportunity to write, edit and publish their poems in a hardback book that they can illustrate and give to their mother (or special female relative) for Mother's Day.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of allowing students to learn, write, edit, publish and illustrate their poetry is that they take ownership in the final product. They are engaged and invested because it is a gift for a loved one. Taking them through the writing process and allowing them to create a finished product allows the students to process their knowledge about poetry in a way that they will remember. It gives them ownership and pride. I have asked for enough books that our entire third grade at Poinciana will be able to participate and benefit. This activity is excellent because it can easily be differentiated for English Language Learners and our ESE students.
