Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 200

Our goal was to expand the knowledge of the growing process for second graders. Students had hands on experience wioth the life cycle of plants as well as butterflies and what there job is in the garden. Students learned about the pollenation process and why bees need to be involved as well as flowers to attract the bees. We used organic material in order to foster a deeper appreciation for the environment. Not only did my students benefit from this project, but the whole primary school did observations and took tours to see the whole growing process. Students learned what plants need to survive. My student enjoyed the vegetables that they grew and because of the abundance of our harvast other classes reaped the benefits too!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to engage students in the learning of the life cycle of the plant by having a hands on experience. Students will also learn about wants and needs as well as what all living things need to survive. They will understand the need for water in order for things to grow.

What will be done with my students

The students will prepare the soil for planting by measuring the amount of nutrients needed to add to the soil. Then they will be planting the plants in the grow boxes and keeping a record in their journals on the growth of the plants weekly. The students will also water the plants daily and record the amount of water used to compare the difference from the beginning of growth to the producing stage of the vegetables.
They will also pick their harvest and eat what they have grown.

Benefits to my students

I have been growing a school garden for 4 years at Golden Terrace Elementary. Through the years the number of students PreK through 2nd Grade who have traveled around and through the garden to teach a lesson to any of the grade levels is immeasurable. The teachers who thank me for having the garden and being able to have the life cycles of plants and insects right out in their courtyard. The students get the experience of growing and producing what they eat. They seem to take a higher stake in the whole process. They are more engaged with hands on projects such as having your own garden.

Budget Narrative

I want to use Botanical Garden's soil because it has proven through the years to produce quality vegetables. This year Earth Box came out with a new box that is for root vegetables. I would like to see if they do as well as the large vegetable boxes. Each year we have to buy spray nozzles because most of the students that do the watering have never used a hose and sprayer before so they get broken easily. The cinder blocks and boards are for getting some of the boxes off the ground to help keep small animals at bay. We recently discovered that our supply box has been infested with a family of rats, so we would like to purchase another one since they ate through the bottom of the one that was there.
