It is my goal to immerse students into hands-on experiments for the science standards that are to be taught throughout the students' third grade year. Through experiments with materials that involve critical thinking, cooperative learning, as well as hands-on activities, the students will be able to successfully learn the content that was taught, and not only learn it, but retain the information, while being engaged!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 18

Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Bucher, and to the License for Learning Plate Fund, for funding my Science Stations grant. They were able to make it so that not only my students benefitted from the use of the materials in the science stations, but once my class completed their stations, these materials were passed to my two co-teacher's classrooms so that actually instead of 18 students beneffiting from the materials, up to 54 students were able to. Fortunately, most of the materials are able to be carried into the next year as well! So far, these students were able to experience numerous science stations in the area of: properties of matter, states of mattter, changes in matter, properties of water, animal adaptations, plants, engineering, kinetic energy, heat energy, sound energy, light energy, light reflection, light absoption, light reflection, and the state of translucence, transparent, and opaque. Thank you for supplying the materials for students to engage in hands-on science experiences to help support text learning. Having first hand experiences, in addition to instruction and reading text, will help to further their knowledge.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

It is my goal to immerse students into hands-on experiments for the science standards that are to be taught throughout the students' third grade year. Through experiments with materials that involve critical thinking, cooperative learning, as well as hands-on activities, the students will be able to successfully learn the content that was taught, and not only learn it, but retain the information, while being engaged!

What will be done with my students

I would like to be able to create multiple "Science Stations" for units of study that the children will be exposed to, in their third grade year. Science Stations are multiple hands-on science experiments or activities, that the children will rotate through, for a unit of study. With the help of volunteers, assistants, and parents, children will be able to rotate to different Science Stations to explore the content. There will also be "Mini Science Stations" where children can experience them by themselves. I would like to be able to do this for each unit of study. Children will be able to first had experience how birds adapt to eating in their environment. They'll visually see how water changes states of matter. They'll explore volume by digging in with materials. They'll be able to see what light passes through. Having first hand experiences, in addition to instruction and reading text, will help to further their knowledge.

Benefits to my students

It is a known fact that students learn in different ways. One of the ways that students learn is through exploratory observations and experiences. By figuring things out for themselves, students are able to open their critical thinking thought processes, which helps in all avenues. By exploring through the use of "Science Stations", students will be actively involved in their own learning, which is very beneficial to becoming successful at what they are learning about, and this success will show on the end of unit assessments. It will also benefit parents, as it gives them the opportunity to help volunteer in the classroom, and explore with their children during the "Science Stations"!

Budget Narrative

All of the items to purchase will be used to create the materials, to laminate them for future use so as to not have to repurchase items, and for the students to interactively explore to enhance their learning.
