Impact to My Classroom

Each year, your organization has provided my class with funding to buy new books for them and this year, the amazement for them in receiving a brand new book is overwhelming. They absolutely love being able to pick out a book that interests them and call it their own, especially since their parents cannot usually afford new books in their lives. With the new technologies that are taking over our everyday lives, students are extremely affected by it and tend to be timid about picking up a book and reading it. Even so, with the generous donation from your organization, the children in my class have been reinspired to open up multiple books daily and start a new journey through many pages of wonder. As a result of this increase in reading, their abilities and reading strategies have also improved. These new book adventures have helped to jump start their creativity, thinking, and imaginations once more, and furthermore, allow them to learn and share these experiences with their siblings, parents, and each other. This is also my sixth year of teaching at my school and my class has always contributed to the Reading Counts competition at our school, but we have never won it, until this past month, and again this month! My class has loved reading in general this year and it has definitely impacted my class's level of interest in books. The amount of gratitude owed to your organization is greater than any thank yous we could supply, but from each of my student's hearts, thank you.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

An increase of interest in reading for the children in my classroom as well as encouragement when they read. Children will also gain confidence in their own reading abilities and help them to be less reluctant to read and more inspired to put a book in their hands and take a travel into their imagination.

What will be done with my students

Each year, I purchase Scholastic books in order to promote fun reading in my classroom. I usually take a list at the beginning of the year from each child asking what three books they wish to have if they had the money, and buy them from Scholastic either online or through their warehouse sales. Each of these books offers them a chance to read it and then take a short quiz on each book. If they pass the quiz, they earn a variety of points dependent upon the difficulty of the book. This in turn causes the children to not only be competitive with one another, but also with other classes throughout the school. It also provides students with a better understanding of some difficult concepts in reading by exposing them to a variety of books

Benefits to my students

With help from your foundation, the 24 children in my class this year will remember these experiences for the rest of their lives. I was grateful enough to start this program 2 years ago with your help and look to continue it this year. I have feedback from last year's students and they can't thank your foundation enough for providing them with new books that they are interested in reading. Each one of them received several of the books I purchased using your generous gift and have shared these books with their siblings as well. I also had 13 out of my 21 students last year that made substantial improvements in their reading and wanting to participate in the quizzes that accompanied each book. One girl in particular thanked me at the end of the year, for the variety of books that she was provided with to read and how much it increased her interest in reading and school in general.
