Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 30

My classroom was buzzing with sewing fever!!!  The students learned basic sewing skills and with the assistance of one our paraprofessionals we were able to do many creative sewing projects.  We constructed gym shorts from old tshirts, created autograph pillows and started our "Sewing for Life" entrepeneur business.  We learned from You Tube videos how to sew hair scrunchies and by using an assembly line created all sorts of colors and sizes.  We created an order form and sold to teachers and students and then we participated in Immokalee's Relay for Life and sold them there too!  They were a big hit.  We also participated in a Kiwanis initiative and made 50 beanies to be worn by children going through cancer.  This year the students needed a lot of guidance and assistance to complete the projects but their enthusiasm was contagious and we will continue to have sewing as part of our career experience classes.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

Students will learn how to operate a sewing machine, follow a pattern and use their imagination to create their own project.
Students will perform basic mending jobs by repairing loose hems, torn seams, and button repairs.
Students will learn what it means to be an entrepreneur and how to develop a business using their sewing skills.
Students will develop self confidence.

What will be done with my students

Currently students enrolled in the Career Education class are receiving classroom instruction and vocational training in Culinary Arts, Auto Technology, and Child Care. We would like to include Sewing and Entrepreneurship. The students will be given the opportunity to rotate through the different training sites based on interest inventory and observation. During this exploration period the students will choose two areas of interest to focus on this year. To keep the class sizes manageable the students will be scheduled by semesters. The students receiving job training in Sewing and Entrepreneurship will develop individual goals based on their current skill level. These goals will be monitored throughout the semester and upon mastery new goals will be set. The students will be taught basic sewing skills advancing to the operation of the sewing machine, to reading patterns and creating their own imaginative individual projects. This will look very different from one to student to the next but the end result will be ownership and pride!!!! The class will consist of direction instruction and a hands-on practicum 2 periods a day 5 days a week.

Benefits to my students

Through sewing, approximately 40 students and 4 teachers/paraprofessionals will learn new daily life/employability skills and will encourage trying new things and using their imagination. Each project will give us the opportunities to persevere and see the benefits of following through to the end. Their confidence in the ability to do new things will transition to other areas of their life. Sewing helps to teach students to follow directions and to have patience. Naturally, sewing teaches students how to focus physically and mentally therefore creating discipline. It provides good practice for eye-hand coordination. Through sewing, social inclusion opportunities will give students with and without disabilities the experience to help reach their end projects and most important develop friendships through commonality. This class will be extended to after school 2x a week to further enhance social inclusion.

Budget Narrative

The budget will enable us to create the Sewing/Entrepreneurship training to the Career Education class. I have scissors, tape measures etc... I will be soliciting volunteers and donations to assist in the success of this vocational training.
