Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 175

The "Who was" & "Who is" books have always been popular, but now that we have been able to add 30 new titles they have been flying off the shelves!  We even had to create a section just for those books!

Many biographies are very mundane and boring, but these titles are obviously written for kids.  The students were able to get a much deeper understanding for the subject and that showed in the quality of their reports.  The wax museum allowed the students to share what they have learned both in a posterboard display, but also verbally by "becoming" the famous person.

These books were so popular that the students requested more, and I ended up buying more throughout the year!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

To increase student's enthusiasm for reading biographies and learning about famous people from history. They will have an opportunity to share a summary of what they have learned to the visitors of the Living Wax Museum.

What will be done with my students

Students will read the high interest "Who was" or "Who is" biographies
Students will select one person and write a report summarizing their subject's life and their contribution(s)
Students will identify a character trait that their subject embodies.
Students will develop a report to deliver orally about their subject.
Students will create a costume to represent the person they studied
Students will memorize their dialog and deliver it to visitors to the "wax museum."
Both students from the other classes will be invited along with parents and administrators.

Benefits to my students

These biographies are very popular. The combination of this set of books and the unique way of presenting what they have learned will create a positive and memorable learning experience for students.
The living wax museum will give the students an opportunity to share information about many different famous people to other students at the school as well as the student's family.

Budget Narrative

This amount will allow me to purchase 30 different paperback titles from Barnes and Noble. These books can be used for multiple years.
