Goal

My goal is to build fluency and confidence with Order of Operations expressions and standards among my students. Students learn more when they are engaged and having fun, so I strive to provide opportunities to practice their skills and deepen their knowledge through the use of educational math games related to our standards. 

What will be done with my students

Fifth grade students are expected to master and be fluent in solving multi-step expressions involving the use of Order of Operations (PEMDAS). According to the 5th Grade MAFS standards, these expressions can include single digit or double digit numbers, fractions, or decimals. This is a skill that is taught and practiced throughout the year, however we have limited resources from our textbook and curriculum guide. The district pulls from the original "24 Game" for a few plans at the beginning of the year, however doesn't provide the actual games or cards. In my experience, my students have absolutely LOVED this game, and often ask to play it when they finish early with other work. I'd love to give them the option to play and practice with this game throughout the year using the different versions of the game available. 

Benefits to my students

Although my ultimate goal is to teach my students a strong number sense and the ability to solve the Order of Operations expressions, this 24 Game teaches them so much more. Students learn to collaborate with their peers while using critical thinking skill and higher order thought processes. They work in teams and celebrate each other's successes in solving the problems. The original version of the 24 Game has proven to greatly impact the practice and mastery of skills necessary, in a fun environment the students enjoy. 

Budget Narrative

Items will be purchased from the most cost effective source. Since the game is not available at a local store, shipping is included in my grant request.
