Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 26

With my grant money I was able to obtain ten "Hot Dots" pens and 12 different card sets, including reading readiness, phonics flashcards, numbers and counting, patterns and sequencing, money and science.  By looking for additional sales on-line, I was able to purchase ten additional card sets and four additional pens.

My students often use the Hot Dots individually and I am able to choose which cards I want each student to work with.  Many times the students will even ask to do the Hot Dots during their earned free time and partner up with their classmates.  I love that this is a tool I can use over and over for many years and I can always add to the selection of cards that the students can choose.  With my students with intellectual disabilites it is nice to have resources for many grade levels, even though I am a middle school teacher, I have students with abilities ranging from pre-kindergarten level up to middle school levels in reading and math.   Hot Dots is one of the best ways to be able to reach all of my students at their own individual level.

Original Grant Overview

Goal

As a first year teacher in a Modified Curriculum Exceptional Student Education classroom, my goal is to offer my students many ways to practice the skills they are learning. Hot Dots will be an additional way for my students to explore the topics we are covering in class.

What will be done with my students

Hot Dots are interactive learning sets that consist of an interactive pen and learning cards. It will allow the students immediate, hands-on, audio and visual feedback for their responses. These math and phonics flashcards will be used to supplement the curriculum the students are learning throughout the school year. Students will work in small groups or individually on specific skills where they may need additional support and/or practice. Students can also work at their own pace.

Benefits to my students

These items are not consumable items, so I will be able to use them for many years to come. Also, there are many add-on cards and curriculum for both elementary and middle grades, so I will be able to match exactly the needs of my students with differing intellectual abilities; I can choose specific cards for each individual student.
