Imagine that feeling of being a struggling learner in an environment where everything seems to be moving at lightning speed! Many of the students at our school feel this way, especially our most fragile group of students. We have around fifty exceptional students in our elementary school that have special needs.
All students have unique needs but especially those with learning and physical disabilities. Our students are part of an inclusion model which requires and encourages them to be educated in the same classrooms along with their general education peers.
Having a disability of any kind can inhibit a child’s ability to do work at the same pace and at the same level as their peers. We feel that the use of iPad's with various educational applications will allow our special needs children to learn right alongside their peers in a fun and engaging way.

Goal

What will be done with my students

The iPads will help our students in many ways. Students will be able to listen to books on the iPad and become more involved and engaged in the class and classroom discussions, without feeling the anxiety of trying to read and understand at the same level as their peers
The iPad's will also help our students by providing them with apps to practice and develop much needed skills in phonics, fluency, comprehension, mathematics, and even to complete research projects in an engaging and rigorous way. We also plan to use the iPad's as incentives for good work and behavior for some of our behaviorally challenged students.

Benefits to my students

The iPad's will give our students a chance to learn necessary skills through technology, to make them that much more ready for the real world - which is our ultimate goal as their educators.
