Goal

As the media specialist, I want our young students to increase their interest and their knowledge of US history by reading engaging historical non-fiction books, especially biographies.
In order to do this, I am updating our collection of biographies that focus on figures in US history. The Who Was? series is the perfect solution for the Avalon Media Center!

What will be done with my students

These books in the "Who Was--?" series focus on important people in history. These books will be used with instruction in media classes, they will be checked out to regular classroom teachers, and they will be showcased on our morning news show. Students will use them as they learn the research process and study biographies. Also, the books will be available for checkout for independent reading. Many of these books are Reading Counts books, so the teacher can monitor comprehension as the students take computer based tests on their selections.

Benefits to my students

This book collection will benefit our students by reinforcing their knowledge about the history of our country. For some of our students, especially our English Language learners, the United States of America is not their native country. Many of them are interested in learning more about our important historical figures, but haven't had access to engaging books on their reading levels. This grant will help them reinforce their learning in social studies as well as make them more educated citizens.

Budget Narrative

I chose books from the Who Was series that are about figures in American history. These books are very reasonable in price for library bound titles. They should last for years of reading enjoyment. I have already have gone to the publisher's website, Perma-Bound, and put these titles in a list ready for purchase.
