Goal

My goal is to empower my 2nd grade students to choose just right books that will enable them to become lifelong readers who read for knowledge and pleasure.

What will be done with my students

Students have been working on building reading stamina and choosing just right books during reading centers this year. Just right books are chosen based "I PICK": Purpose, Interest, Comprehension, and Know. For children to read independently and practice reading, they need a variety of books that are just right. I am requesting a Scholastic Independent Reading Box Set for students to select just right books from and comfortable foam squares to spread out around the classroom to read. Students will go book shopping weekly using the "I PICK" acronym to choose 5-7 just right books. These books will be kept in their book boxes to read during read to self each day.

Benefits to my students

The authors of the Daily 5: Fostering Literacy Independence in the Elementary Grades wrote that Purpose + Choice = Motivation. I believe choice is motivational and puts students in charge of their learning. Research indicates that students who read independently for a sustained amount of time each day improve comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and vocabulary. Please support our classroom goal of building reading stamina and becoming lifelong readers!
