Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 36

The goal of this grant was to give my English Language Learners a daily opportunity to reinforce math and language skills in an engaging and challenging format. The students increased their skills and gained confidence in their abilities. They enjoyed the website, so they used it often and learned more math and language arts. This website helped students at their current levels, and provided challenges for my gifted students and support for my struggling students. Using IXL created a time for the reinforcement of skills on the weekend or after school when students were at home. In school, students used the website with their classroom teacher or with me (their English Language Learner resource teacher). I received reports that showed the time the students had practiced and the problems they answered. Then the students earned certificates that I presented to them in front of the whole class. Their self-esteem soared and their skills were strengthened. What more could I have asked for? Most of all, I believe that the greatest gains will be accomplished during the summer, when they will not have a teacher with them. They can use this website on their own, and stay current with their skill levels!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

The goal of this grant is to give my English Language Learners a daily opportunity to reinforce math and language skills in an engaging and challenging format. The students will increase their skills and gain confidence in their abilities.

What will be done with my students

IXL is not just about helping students learn math or language arts. It's also about helping them enjoy learning. It offers hours of entertainment for students while teaching them to grasp key concepts. This website will be used to help build the students’ skills through guided and independent practice. It will utilize the students’ current levels, providing challenges for my gifted students, providing support for my struggling students, and providing reinforcement of skills for my on-level students. In school, students may use the website with their classroom teacher or me (their English Language Learner resource teacher). In the evening or on the weekend, students may use the website at home and receive instant feedback and instruction on the skills they are lacking or having trouble understanding. If a student is struggling with a topic, questions will get a little bit easier until the student proves he or she is ready to move on to tougher challenges. I will receive many reports from IXL that cover everything I need to know about my students' skills, emphasizing their growth and their trouble spots. It will give suggestions for skills my students should practice to reach success. These reports will show the time the students have practiced, the problems they have answered, and more.

Benefits to my students

IXL is user-friendly for students, parents and teachers. Students can earn virtual prizes and awards to celebrate learning milestones as they play games and learn necessary skills. This website is like the game systems that students have at home, so they are very eager to play the games and learn the concepts!
IXL offers my students over 4,000 skills through a wide variety of questions that produce deeper levels of learning. It is also aligned to the Common Core standards which will allow students to achieve the grade level expectations. The students will have unlimited access to all of the levels allowing the gifted student to be challenged and the struggling student to be supported. My students will never run out of new questions as they practice each skill. I will even receive an alert to help me monitor my groups’ work. After analyzing the reports, I will be able to strengthen my students' trouble areas. With the use of IXL, my students and I will celebrate their efforts and successes!

Budget Narrative

The total price for 25 students to use both the math and the language arts skills is $349.00. This will give each student full access to the site at school and at home for one full year. If students leave Calusa Park Elementary, I can delete their membership and add another student, so the roster can change with enrollment. Thank you for considering my grant and supporting Calusa Park Elementary School.
