Students will learn about fiction and nonfiction as they read books that are written as companion books. Author Mary Pope Osborne began writing her Magic Tree House series as fantasy books and has more recently written many nonfiction titles, or FACT FINDER books, that are companion books to the fantasies.
For example, in Tonight on the Titanic, Annie and Jack go back in time to the fateful night on the Titanic where they help save a toddler and manage to escape tragedy. The book Titanic: a nonfiction guide to Night on the Titanic answers questions such as: How long did it take to build the Titanic? Why did it sink? What was it like to be a passenger? What happened to the people who survived?
Through these books students have the opportunity to learn about history, science, and important events from two different perspectives. These books will be in the school's media center and will be available for students school wide. These books are well written and circulate widely among our students.

What will be done with my students

I will promote the books to students as they visit the media center and also via the school news. I will challenge students to read the fiction book and the nonfiction "Fact Finder" on the same topic. Students will be welcome to join the morning news program to do a Book Talk about a pair of books.

Benefits to my students

Students find fantasy engaging. These popular fantasy books can lead a student to question and seek information on the real-life events that were the basis for the fantasies. Students will gain an understanding of how much research is done by the author as she prepares to write either the fantasy or the "Fact Finder" book.

Budget Narrative

This books I will purchase are all from the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne. Of the books, 38 are fiction and 4 are nonfiction. We already have the balance of nonfiction, but many of the fiction books need to be replaced. The price includes the book cost of $443.46 plus the processing cost (barcodes, spine labels, cataloging) of $32.88.
