Goal

The goal of the annual Sabal Palm Elementary Literacy on the Lawn event is to showcase student writing, promote parental involvement in each child's reading and writing efforts, and to involve local businesses and organizations in our school's literacy program.

What will be done with my students

I am the media specialist at my school. I have the privilege of seeing our students' excitement for reading and writing. As part of that excitement, every Sabal Palm student in grades K-5 will write and illustrate their own book for display at our annual Literacy on the Lawn event. This year's event is May 3, 2016 from 5-7pm. We hope to provide our 500 students with a hard cover blank book to work on throughout the school year. All of our students will receive research skills instruction in the Media Center, writing instruction in the classroom, technology instruction in our technology lab, and help from our reading coach as needed. Our students will learn to follow the Collier County Schools Research Process by identifying a topic, researching and organizing information, and creating, finalizing, and evaluating their own books. They will utilize "thinking maps" to help them organize their thoughts and plan their writing. Parents and families will be invited to come to Literacy on the Lawn to read and admire their child's writing.

In addition to student books on display, we will invite representatives from businesses, local authors, the fire department, the Cypress Palm Middle School band, and more, to set up information tables on May 3rd. We will also be inviting teachers and other community members to be guest readers. Grade level teams of teachers will set up interactive literacy activities and games. A DJ will keep things hopping with music, dancing, and special announcements and drawings throughout the evening. This event is also the perfect time to encourage students to participate in our summer reading program. We will invite Barnes & Noble and the Estates Branch Library to come and talk to families about the importance of summer reading.

Benefits to my students

Literacy on the Lawn will be a culmination of many months of reading and writing for our students, teachers, and parents! We believe a good literacy program is a partnership with parents and community organizations. Every student will be able to take home a hard cover book they create, and have it as a keepsake for many years to come. Out goal is to see 500 student created books on display at Literacy on the Lawn!

Budget Narrative
