The unfortunate part about alternative schools is that most of our students come to us with unwelcoming "labels" from their previous schools, communities, and peers. As an experience educator, I make it a priority to teach the importance defying the odds by incorporating a sound education, character development, and a civic responsibility to become "your personal BEST". Last year, I created that opportunity with my students. We collectively collaborated on a softcover book whereas each student descriptively visualized their life 20 years from now. They wrote very intricate details and "created" the life that they plan to have in the future. The students were thrilled and pleasantly surprised to see the outcome which was a class copy of the book. Most importantly, they were able to create a new "label" for themselves...Published Authors.

Goal

What will be done with my students

1. Students will visualize their life 20 years from now
2. Students will understand the grander scale of how their life's purpose is meant to serve society and be productive citizens in our world.
3. Students will write a letter to themselves
4. I will edit and print copies of the book which contains every students letter.
5. Each student will receive their own copy of the book
6. We will have a Book Signing Event, where they will invite their mentors, parents, guardians, or special guests to hear them read their letter

Benefits to my students

The benefit is that the students will see themselves as productive members of society rather than a threat or a disruptive member. Additionally, it will spark innovation within the students to reach for greater heights academically & socially. The individual copies of the book will give the students a tangible item to reflect on even as they transition from the alternative school and move forward in their life.

Budget Narrative

In the past I ordered the books through Blurb.com. This year I plan to do the same. I design and edit it myself to keep the price down. Shipping fees are added directly from Blurb.
