Goal

Imagine that your teacher asks you to write a story... you can visualize the story in your mind but when you have to write it down, you struggle to do it. The goal of the Lego Story Starter set is to allow students to build the story that they can visualize with Lego blocks, and then with the help of teachers, peers and technology learn the structure and words to create a written work which they can then publish and share. 

What will be done with my students

Students will be engaged as they work in small groups with their Lego block sets. They will create models with Lego characters, props, settings and details. They will learn to structure their stories with a beginning, middle and end. They will be encouraged to combine their imagination and language to visualize, build, write and publish their stories. The Story Visualizer Software, that is included, enables students to take pictures of their models, and document their story to share with others. 

Benefits to my students

Students will:
- Expand on 2014-15 "Build Me Up!" grant, which exposed students to new vocabulary through Lego BuildtoExpress curriculum.
- Become fully engaged in the writing process through the hands on activities.
- Write to develop real or imagined events using effective technique, descriptive details and clear event sequence.
- Strengthen writing, as needed, with support of adults and peers through planning, revising and editing.
- Use technology to produce writing, as well as, to interact and collaborate with others.
- Acquire and use accurately a range of words and phrases sufficient for reading, writing, speaking and listening.  

Budget Narrative

The StoryStarter Classroom Pack is designed for 6 students and includes the Lego Core sets with Lego blocks. The pack also includes a curriculum pack, with writing prompts and ideas, the Story Visualizer software for computers and access to the Story Visualizer app for tablets.
