Goal

The goal of this grant is to encourage a love of literacy and writing within each student by publishing an individual book.

What will be done with my students

Every student in grades kindergarten through 5th grade will publish their writing in an individual book. These published books will then be highlighted at a Reading Festival. The festival will include an invitation for parents and community members to attend as well as the following events:
*Author's Tea for students to read their published books to parents and other students
*Mini-book Make and Take
*Presentations by published authors
*Presentations by local artists
*Students and staff dressed as characters

Benefits to my students

There are many benefits to writing. However, at the forefront is students' pride and belief in themselves when they see their writing transformed into a published book. Writing is a skill that is used throughout the school day. Students with improved writing skills will benefit not just in reading, but in math, science, and social studies. In addition, the Reading Festival will involve the entire school body as well as the school community. Many of our parents are second language learners and this will provide the materials and know how to publish books at home.

This grant will allow us to follow up on the very successful implementation of Hop to It Publishing during the 2014-15 school year. Over 85% of Parkside Elementary students published book. This year we hope to expand and improve on this.
