Goal

The goal of this project is to provide Lego Creator kits for students to use in a 3D Computer Modeling Program.

What will be done with my students

This project will support students in the Introduction to Engineering Design course, as part of Immokalee High School's new Academy of Engineering. Through this course, students will become familiar with the Autodesk Inventor 3D Modelling software, creating several projects and working towards their industry certification in this software.

This project aims to provide students with Lego Creator 3-in-1 kits to use in a reverse engineering project. This project consists of two main components: Product Analysis and Product Recreation.

In the Product Analysis component, students will work in groups to sketch, measure, and analyze the function of each individual piece, as well as how they combine to form the final product.

The Product Recreation component has students use their measurements and sketches to recreate and assemble the kits in the Autodesk Inventor 3D software. Students will then generate engineering blueprints and assembly videos based on their recreated products.

Benefits to my students

This project prepares students for both significant assessments in this course, their End-of-Course exam and the Autodesk Inventor certification exam. The introduction to this project focuses on materials analysis, measurement, and sketching. These are three key concepts targeted on the course EOC. The second component of the project, recreating the parts in 3D, prepares students to sit for the Autodesk Inventor Industry Certification test.

The Lego creator kits would have several benefits for the students. Lego kits are made of dozens of variations on the same basic pieces. Creating the individual pieces allows students to practice a wide variety of skills needed in the Autodesk Inventor software. Since the pieces are all variations on the same basic shapes, students will be able to progress naturally from the easier shapes to more advanced ones. Additionally, since Legos are designed to fit together, assembling the final product in the software would provide students with consistent practice.

Budget Narrative

15 basic level Lego Creator sets will be purchased at a price of $4.99 - $9.99 each. An assortment will be selected to offer greater variety among student projects.

7 advanced Lego Creator sets will be purchased at a cost of $9.99 - $16.99 each. An assortment will be selected to offer greater variety among student projects. These kits use additional challenging pieces and would be given to advanced groups of students.
