Suncoast Credit Union

My goal is to continue to provide my students the opportunity to experience the hands- on activities for growing various plants in the garden box growing systems that I have purchased in prior years of this ongoing grant. Also, teaching them about nutrition and the responsiblility of working with others to achieve a successful crop. Students from all classes will have the opportunity to watch the progress of plant growth and share in the crops!

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 18

Our school started out with our garden project budding. Then the hurricane hit us and we started all over again. We did not give up. We harvested cherry tomatoes and green beans. Broccoli and cabbage came next. We are currently on a second round of broccoli, green beans, and okra.

With the grand monies, I was able to begin the development of a school reading garden in the center court of our campus. The hurricane knocked down a large tree which was dragged out of the area and along with it some of our plants. We had the grounds leveled and sodded by the CCPS maintenance dept. Then we replanted annuals and perennials. A former parent has two benches which will be donated for the students to sit on while reading in the garden. I am asking for continued support for this garden area and as I retire, I hope someone will take it over and continue the gardening at the school.

Our field trip was changed from the Conservancy to The Botanical Gardens as I found out third grade has a field trip to The Conservancy. Our luck because The Botanical Gardens had the Dinosaur Exhibit there! The students have taken care of the watering and replanting of both food and reading gardens. They are so proud of them and always want to go check on things! Thank you again for having such a wonderful program!

Original Grant Overview

Goal

My goal is to continue to provide my students the opportunity to experience the hands- on activities for growing various plants in the garden box growing systems that I have purchased in prior years of this ongoing grant. Also, teaching them about nutrition and the responsiblility of working with others to achieve a successful crop. Students from all classes will have the opportunity to watch the progress of plant growth and share in the crops!

What will be done with my students

The students will learn the benefits of gardening through our standards based Science concepts including life cycles of plants, soil importance, nutrition for our lives. Research will include finding the best vegetables for current growing seasons and in our climate. Then the students will prepare the previously purchased garden boxes for the first planting in September. Lessons will include using the scientific process, light energy, properties of soil and water, and using journaling to keep records. We will replant throughout the year. Inquiry skills will include making observations, predicting, recording data, and drawing conclusions.

Benefits to my students

There are so many benefits to the students! In prior years I have seen an increase in student responsibility, pride in the product and within each and every student in my classes. Every year the class becomes so engaged, enthusiastic, and excited with the learning that takes place all year. Students in the past have worked through insect infestation, root rot, over watering from too much rain, and poor plant quality. Starting seeds in the classroom under our grow lights enables students to try various ways to grow. All in all a sense of responsibility and community are developed. Students come back year after year to "check out the garden"!

Budget Narrative

The budget items are mainly for new plants, seeds, and other consumable items as the grow boxes were purchased in prior years. I try to purchase "on sale" items when possible and will be estimated.
