I want to not only foster engaging Literacy Centers, but ones that will keep my students eyes on text while learning essential tools for their reading and writing proficiency. Literacy Centers take place independently while the teacher works with a small group of students for Guided Reading. Guided Reading is the most crucial part of the Literacy Center reading block; it is vital that the remainder of the class is actively engaged in productive and engaging learning activities so the teacher may focus on the small group setting for intensive reading instruction. There are four rotations of 15 minutes each with one of those rotations being teacher directed reading instruction each day.

Goal

I want to not only foster engaging Literacy Centers, but ones that will keep my students eyes on text while learning essential tools for their reading and writing proficiency. Literacy Centers take place independently while the teacher works with a small group of students for Guided Reading. Guided Reading is the most crucial part of the Literacy Center reading block; it is vital that the remainder of the class is actively engaged in productive and engaging learning activities so the teacher may focus on the small group setting for intensive reading instruction. There are four rotations of 15 minutes each with one of those rotations being teacher directed reading instruction each day.

What will be done with my students

With the funding of this grant, my students will be working independently with an essential curriculum standards based Literacy Center. The three center activities that I have chosen, Can Do! Sight-Words Game, Writing Activity Stations, and Sentence Building Learning Center, will not only keep my students actively engaged in their learning of essential skills, but will also provide the opportunity for my students to work collaboratively with their peers for added support and internalization of the targeted skills.

Benefits to my students

Through these three significant learning centers my students will be able to work independently and reap the benefits of sight word practice, sentence building practice, and work through the writing process to become more proficient in these much needed skills to help them to become ready to be competitive as a 21st century learner. Additionally, while my students are becoming experienced in fundamental standard based skills, I will be able to be more focused on my rotation of guided intensive reading to enable all students to be successful in second grade and beyond.

Budget Narrative

With the funding of theses three essential Literacy Center activities my entire second grade class will reap the benefits of collaborative learning and become highly engaged learners by internalizing critical reading and writing skills.
