Goal

The goal of this grant is for each of my second grade students to become fluent in their writing in all areas of the curriculum. Writing is a critical piece to academic success, by infusing writing in all subject areas I am giving my students the rigor that they need to be successful not only in their academic journey but as a life skill that is often overlooked in todays world of high tech.

What will be done with my students

Everyday students need to be expressing their ideas and learning through the written word. It is imperative that this generation become masters at expressing themselves within their writing. The next generation of standardized test takers will not simply be filling in multiple choice questions, but will be expected to express their thought process and knowledge through their writing. By having a composition book for each subject area and using them each day to record learning, I intend to give my students the edge they will need to be successful and productive learners.

Benefits to my students

Each day, in every subject area my students will be writing and recording their learning. During Literacy Centers my students will write responses to their daily reading, as well as recording questions and predictions that will enrich their reading experience and help them to develop the love of reading to become lifelong readers. During our science block my students will record the Scientific Method by writing questions about our current concepts, making predictions, and recording their learning through every step of our scientific journey. My students will be active learners in social studies and engage in research of the topics that are communicated; by writing each day they will internalize their learning and be better equipped to tackle each new area of the social studies curriculum. During math it is critical for students to not only talk about their thought process, but to record it as well and to be able to go back and build on each concept that is taught. We are beginning a new phonics program which I piloted in my classroom last year; Reading Horizons. This new program will help all types of learners to better decode words during reading and to learn basic spelling patterns. Additionally this program integrates grammar that is critical to my low socially economic classroom population. I learned from piloting this program last year that it is vital for students to have a journal to record their learning and a reference to use throughout the day for support in all areas of the curriculum. Laying a foundation through writing is an essential component for the 21st century learner.

Budget Narrative

With the funding of this grant each of my students will receive a composition book for every subject area to record their learning and gain the essential writing skills that are mandatory to assure their academic success.
