Goal

My goal is to build fraction fluency by rewarding students for hard work, responsibility, and our school-wide positive behavior expectations with fraction pieces!  

What will be done with my students

Students consistently struggle understanding concepts related to fractions. To help build a solid foundation of understanding fractions, I created "The Fractory." Throughout the school day, students earn fraction pieces for demonstrating hard work, perseverance, responsibility and our positive behavior expectations. At the beginning of the week, students are given a goal fraction for the week. For example, students are expected to make 1 whole as their goal fraction sum. As they collect their pieces, students begin adding fractions together to make the goal fraction. For each goal fraction a student makes, they earn a Fraction Buck which can be spent at "The Fractory." The money used from this grant will purchase items for "The Fractory" store.  

Benefits to my students

Although my goal is to build fraction fluency, "The Fractory" teaches students so much more. Not only do students get a working knowledge of creating equivalent fractions, adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers; they also gain valuable experience in budgeting and saving money and managing their resources responsibly. The Fractory has greatly impacted students' understanding of fractions in the past. I hope to keep motivating students to become excited about learning fractions with "The Fractory" for years to come! 

Budget Narrative

Items will be purchased from Party City and Oriental Trading. Items and quantities were chosen based on student and teacher feedback.
