Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 20

The goal for my project was to have 100% of my students reading and comprehending the challenging texts of the Sunshine State Young Readers Books (SSYR). Overall, I am extremely pleased with the outcome. All of my students were able to participate this year in our school-wide initiative of the SSYR program, either by reading the books on their own or through the read aloud option of the subscription to www.audiobooks.com. All of my students read at least three SSYR books this year. One adjustment that I needed to make was to switch from a Kindle to an iPad due to the end of year project of making iMovies. The iPad was needed to support the software needed for this project. Also, rather than sending the device home for students to use, I kept the device in the classroom and students read the SSYR books during independent reading time. The students did an amazing job recreating the books with iMovies! This year I had the students choose their favorite book to create an iMovie about. I was so happy with the amount of student engagement and interest in creating the iMovies that next year, I will have the students create an iMovie for each SSYR book that they finish. As a culminating activity, the students shared their iMovies at a Red Carpet Premiere Event, where parents, school administration, and other school faculty were invited to attend. The students wrote a brief introduction about their iMovie, spoke before the audience, and we watched their iMovie. The students were so proud of their accomplishments and couldn't wait to share. The parents were amazed at what the students did. It was a great time! I will definitely do this project again next year!! Thank you for your support!

What will be done with my students

Throughout the school year, students will read the various genres and challenging texts of the Sunshine State Young Readers books (SSYRA). Due to the complexity of some of these books, some students, such as ELL students or reluctant readers, do not participate in our school wide initiatives to encourage reading these SSYRA books. One way to encourage all my students to participate is by allowing them to listen to the stories through the use of the website www.audiobooks.com and have the students follow along with their own copy of the story. Students will be allowed to “check-out” a Kindle reader so that they may complete their independent reading at home. Once the student has completed the book, they will demonstrate their comprehension of the story by completing a Reading Counts comprehension test, and they will complete a written book review of the story. After completing at least five of the fifteen Sunshine State Young Readers Books, students will create an iMovie about their favorite book. The students will then celebrate their success with an “iMovie Red Carpet Premier Event”.

Benefits to my students

This will benefit all of my students, especially my ELL students and my reluctant readers. Students will be able to take home a Kindle so they can listen to the story and follow along with the book. It will increase their reading comprehension, increase their vocabulary, and increase their confidence with Reading. It is my hope that this increased confidence will motivate my students to read more independently, which will benefit them in all subject areas in school. In the digital age that students live in, the use of the Kindle Fire along with audiobook.com will engage students and encourage readers to interact with what they have read.

Budget Narrative

The request is for one Kindle Fire and its protective otter box which the students will be able to “check-out” to use in class or at home. The fifteen books chosen this year as the Sunshine State Young Reader books will be purchased so that there is a class set available for student use. Also, a 9 month subscription to Audiobooks.com at $14.95 per month will be purchased to allow students to listen to the stories as they follow along with the book. Finally, celebration materials will be purchased for the “iMovie Red Carpet” event. Shipping is free when ordering with Amazon.
