Goal

Goal:
Students with and without disabilities in first grade will team up with pre-K students to practice social and communication skills through joint core academic projects and activities.

What will be done with my students

What will be done with the students?
Once a month students will meet in pairs or triads to work together on a life skills STEM project. For example, simple cooking projects, gardening, or building. The second meeting of the month will be a social activity or game to promote conversation skills such as listening, empathizing, speaking, and writing. Within the ten months students will participate in 10 STEM based activities and 10 social skill activities. They will record and monitor their progress in a booklet. This will culminate the year by their creation of a book filled with reflections and photos. 50% of all supplies will continue to be used each year.

Benefits to my students

Benefits:
This program will build learning networks across grade levels through student and teacher collaboration, innovation, and sharing of resources . It will promote and support friendships between ESE and typically developing children at two grade levels. First grade ESE students will practice leadership skills with typically developing pre-K students. ESE pre-K students will work on projects with typically developing first graders who will be strong communication role models. A by-product of this program will be enhanced literacy, math, and science skills for our students.
