Walton Education Foundation

The goal of this project is to create a learning environment where students can maintain focus, increase engagement, and feel comfortable while learning. Many children find it difficult to sit still in traditional chairs for long periods, which often leads to distractions and reduced attention during lessons. By providing flexible seating options such as wobble stools, floor cushions, and lap desks, students will have the freedom to choose seating that best fits their needs and learning styles.
Our objective is to improve student attention, participation, and learning outcomes through these seating aids. The project will help children develop stronger focus, reduce restlessness, and support their ability to work collaboratively and independently. Ultimately, this will contribute to higher achievement in reading, writing, and problem-solving—skills directly connected to grade-level standards and long-term success.

Impact to My Classroom

# of Students Impacted: 32

The purpose of implementing flexible seating in my 2nd grade ELA classroom was to help improve students’ attention spans, focus, and overall engagement during instruction. Many students learn best when they are given opportunities to move while working, so these seating options were added to create a more comfortable and supportive learning environment.

The classroom received the following flexible seating materials:

  • Stools
  • Wobble Cushions
  • Wobble Chair Feet (10 pack)
  • Portable Lap Desks (10 pack)

These materials were used during whole-group lessons, small groups, independent work, and partner activities throughout the day.

Impact on Student Learning

  • Improved Focus and Attention |The flexible seating options helped students stay focused for longer periods of time during ELA instruction. Students who typically struggled with sitting still were able to move safely and appropriately while still remaining engaged in learning activities. The wobble cushions and chair feet especially helped students release energy without disrupting instruction.
  • Increased Engagement | Students became more excited and motivated to participate in classroom activities when given seating choices. During reading and writing tasks, students were more willing to stay on task and complete assignments. The flexible seating also helped create a more positive and inviting classroom environment.
  • Support for Student Needs | The different seating options allowed me to better support the needs of all learners. Some students benefited from movement while others preferred using lap desks to work comfortably in different areas of the classroom. Giving students these choices helped them take ownership of their learning and practice self-regulation skills.
  • Positive Classroom Environment | Overall, the flexible seating helped create a calmer and more student-centered classroom. Students learned how to use the materials responsibly and understood that the seating choices were tools to help them learn successfully.

The addition of flexible seating has had a positive impact on my 2nd grade ELA classroom. Students have shown improvements in focus, participation, and engagement during instruction. Providing students with movement-friendly seating options has supported both learning and classroom behavior while helping create a classroom environment where students feel comfortable and successful.

What will be done with my students

This project will provide alternative seating options for students throughout the school day. The plan is as follows:
• Who: One classroom teacher will oversee the project and guide students in using the new seating responsibly. Approximately 24 students will benefit this year, with many more in the years to come.
• Why this is unique: Instead of a “one-size-fits-all” desk, each student will have a choice that meets their needs. This approach encourages responsibility, independence, and a sense of ownership in learning.
Over the course of the year, students will use flexible seating daily during lessons in reading, writing, and group projects.

• When: Flexible seating will be introduced within the first month after the grant is funded. Students will rotate options until they learn which seating supports their best focus.
• What: The classroom will include a variety of seating—wobble stools for active sitters, wobble chair feet for improved focus in whole group, wobble cushions for small-group activities, and lap desks for working away from traditional tables. Clear expectations will be established so that seating helps, rather than distracts, from learning.

Benefits to my students

The benefits of this project include both measurable academic outcomes and personal growth.
Measurable Objectives & Evaluation:
• Increased time-on-task, tracked through teacher observations and classroom data.
• Improvement in reading and writing performance, measured through quarterly assessments and state testing.
• Student surveys to measure their perception of focus, comfort, and engagement in class.
• Reduced classroom disruptions, tracked by fewer redirections during lessons.
Outputs (direct results):
• 36 students will immediately benefit from flexible seating this year.
• In future years, classes will continue to use the items as they are durable and reusable.
• Classroom will have 30+ flexible seating items purchased and in daily use.
