Children are naturally active and learn most effectively when their physical and sensory needs are supported. However, traditional classroom environments often require students to remain seated in fixed positions for extended periods, which can negatively affect concentration and lead to off-task behaviors. These behaviors are not acts of defiance but rather signs that the learning environment is not meeting the developmental needs of young learners.
This project aims to improve student achievement by transforming the classroom into a more responsive and student-centered space through the use of flexible seating. By offering options such as wobble stools and other movement-friendly seating choices, students will be empowered to select seating that helps them stay focused, comfortable, and engaged. When students feel physically supported and have choice in their learning environment, they are more likely to take ownership of their behavior and academic responsibilities.
Flexible seating supports the development of critical executive functioning skills such as self-regulation, sustained attention, and decision-making—skills that are essential for academic success. As a result, students are expected to demonstrate increased time on task, higher levels of participation, and improved work completion.
To evaluate the effectiveness of this project, I will track student engagement, behavior, and productivity using classroom data such as task completion rates and the frequency of redirections. My goal is to see a measurable increase in focus and academic performance throughout the 2025–26 school year. In the long term, this flexible seating initiative will continue to foster a positive and productive learning environment that benefits both current and future students.
Class Furniture - Carpets, choral risers, transitional seating/desks, etc.
In the 2025–26 school year, my students will actively participate in a flexible seating initiative designed to support diverse learning needs and increase academic engagement. Each day, 18 students will be welcomed into a classroom environment that empowers them to choose seating arrangements that best support their focus, comfort, and learning style.
Expected Results by End of 2025–26 School Year:
Increased student engagement and task completion.
Reduced behavioral interruptions and need for redirection.
Improved focus and academic performance.
Greater student ownership over learning and classroom responsibilities.
By giving students choice and agency in their learning environment, this project will foster a classroom culture built on trust, respect, and academic excellence—laying the foundation for long-term success.
Introducing flexible seating in my classroom will create a more student-centered learning environment that fosters focus, engagement, and personal responsibility. By allowing students to choose seating that supports their individual needs, we can reduce common distractions and minimize the need for repeated directions—giving us more time to focus on meaningful learning.
This initiative aims to improve classroom efficiency and student self-regulation. My target is for students to complete tasks within the allotted time while requiring minimal redirection, with a goal of 80% of lessons proceeding with no more than one prompt. I will use daily behavior and engagement tracking tools to monitor and assess this progress.
I’m always seeking innovative ways to create a positive and productive classroom experience. Flexible seating will not only increase student comfort and motivation but will also promote independence and self-awareness. With the help of this grant, I hope to implement a range of seating options that will benefit my current students and continue to support learners for years to come.
