Thank you to the following investor for funding this grant.
The Alys Foundation - $2,000.00
This project is designed to significantly improve student achievement by increasing independent reading engagement, strengthening comprehension, and enhancing collaborative discussion skills. The initiative addresses the need for flexible learning environments and diverse, high-quality texts that support both differentiated instruction and student-driven exploration.
To meet these needs, the project will provide:
Flexible seating options that promote student choice, comfort, and focus during independent reading and small-group collaboration.
A curated collection of high-interest, BEST-aligned texts to engage students in literature circles, support targeted small-group interventions, and encourage meaningful discussions.
By combining flexible seating with purposeful text selection, this project will foster an environment where students build reading stamina, deepen comprehension, and develop confidence in their ability to analyze and discuss texts. The overall impact will be increased motivation, higher proficiency levels, and stronger ownership of learning across the classroom community.
Learning Aids - Sunshine state book sets, robotics kits, puzzle boards, science models, engineering supplies, etc.
Beginning in September 2025, this project will transform the classroom into a more engaging and student-centered learning environment. Flexible seating zones will be established with the purchase and setup of eight perch stools in vibrant colors, giving students choice and comfort while promoting focus and collaboration during independent reading, paired reading, and small-group instruction. At the same time, the classroom library will be expanded with multiple copies of carefully selected, BEST-aligned 4th grade texts, including Little House in the Big Woods, Promises to Keep, Chester Nez and the Unbreakable Code, Aaron and Alexander, and Halfway Down by A.A. Milne. From September to November, these texts will be organized and introduced into literature circles, structured small-group rotations, and dedicated independent reading time, ensuring all students engage with rich, rigorous materials.
Instructional implementation will begin in October and continue through February 2026, with weekly independent reading and two small-group rotations each day designed to strengthen comprehension, discussion skills, and overall reading stamina. Teachers will monitor student progress using formative checks, discussion rubrics, and performance-based assessments that directly support growth on state FAST benchmarks and proficiency measures. By targeting both skill development and student motivation, this initiative is expected to yield measurable gains in reading achievement, while also cultivating lifelong learning habits.
The impact of this project will extend well beyond the 2025–26 school year. The flexible seating zones and high-quality library collection will remain as permanent features of the classroom, benefitting future groups of 4th grade students for years to come. Each new cohort will have access to these engaging texts and collaborative learning spaces, ensuring that the gains in motivation, comprehension, and proficiency continue to multiply across classes, magnifying the project’s long-term value for student success. In addition, this initiative directly aligns with the school’s improvement plan to raise literacy proficiency rates by increasing student engagement, providing targeted small-group instruction, and ensuring access to BEST-aligned, grade-level texts—further supporting schoolwide efforts to close achievement gaps and promote academic excellence.
This project will directly support student achievement by improving reading stamina, comprehension, and engagement through flexible seating and high-interest, BEST-aligned texts. Students will benefit from greater comfort and focus during independent reading and small-group instruction, while engaging texts will drive motivation and deeper understanding. Progress will be measured using tools already embedded in instruction, ensuring sustainability and ease of follow-up reporting. Specifically, growth will be tracked through FAST assessments, with the goal of showing measurable gains in proficiency from PM1 to PM2 and continued improvement by PM3. Teacher fluency logs will also monitor increases in reading stamina by 5–10 minutes over the course of the year, and student engagement will be measured through classroom observations and short pre/post surveys tied to independent reading and literature discussions. With 37 students impacted in 2025–26, and materials reused each year to reach future cohorts of 30–40 students, this project will provide both immediate and long-term benefits while directly supporting schoolwide literacy goals.
This grant will provide the essential standard-aligned, high quality, reading and flexible seating materials needed to create a more engaging and effective learning environment. Funds will support the purchase of flexible seating for two classrooms, allowing students greater choice and comfort during independent reading and small-group learning. In addition, a robust collection of BEST-aligned texts will be added to the classroom library, ensuring access to multiple copies of high-interest books that promote literature circles, independent practice, and targeted interventions. Together, these resources will directly advance the project’s goals of improving student engagement, reading stamina, and comprehension. The budget includes purchase costs, estimated shipping, and minor tax adjustments. All items will be ordered in coordination with the school bookkeeper and administrator and purchased in alignment with district guidelines to ensure accountability and compliance.
