Goal

Our 3rd grade team would like to achieve at a minimum 65% proficiency in the area of ELA on PM 3 of the Florida FAST assessment in May. At our school, we currently have the highest percentage of ESE and low income students in our district. My personal class has a current proficient level of 13%. This percent of students on grade level is unacceptable to me and my third grade team. Our students do not have access to quality literature except in our classrooms. It is imperative that students be immersed in good quality literature in order to develop into a proficient reader and the main goal to fall in love with reading. Our team has had great success in the past, and we feel that with the additional books we could continue to help the students in our community achieve in the area of reading.

What will be done with my students

We will use the funds to purchase books from the BEST book list given to us by the state. These BEST books were chosen by our state as examples of high interest, complex text that meet the ELA standards for a Florida third graders. Having multiple copies of the books, each student will have a copy of the book as we teach. These titles will help us prepare engaging lessons that cover the ELA standards for fiction and nonfiction books such as character development, theme, central idea, figurative language, text structure and many more. The standards are rigorous and each student having a copy will allow them to make personal notes, follow along in the text, and be an active reader. When each student has a copy, we teachers can utilize more effective methods for student learning and engagement such as partner reading and literature circles where students respond to their reading by synthesizing what they read and debate different ideas with each other.  

 

Benefits to my students

With each student having a copy of the BEST book, engagment and participation will increase which will increase their mastery of the standards. With this mastery of the standards, at a minimum 65% of our third grade students will score a 3 or higher on PM3 of the FAST assessment in May of 2026.  

 

Budget Narrative

We would like grade level sets of the following books for students to enjoy each year: The Little Prince, Flight, and The Whipping Boy. In addition to the books, we have included the purchase price for whisper phones. Whisper phones have been proven to help struggling readers increase their accuracy and reading comprehension.
