Goal

The purpose of this grant is to create a supportive and engaging first-grade classroom by introducing flexible seating options, sensory tools, and hands-on materials that encourage focus, self-regulation, and active participation. By designing a student-centered environment, this project seeks to accommodate different learning needs, strengthen attention and positive behaviors, and promote a welcoming space where every child can succeed academically and socially. These improvements will foster movement, comfort, and sensory input, ultimately enhancing learning outcomes and overall student well-being.

What will be done with my students

To create a more engaging and supportive first grade classroom, I will incorporate flexible seating, sensory tools, and manipulatives that will enhance learning through the following actions:

1. Foster Active Engagement and Focus
Action: Flexible seating will be used to encourage movement, comfort, and sustained attention during lessons, helping students remain actively engaged in their learning.

2. Support Sensory Needs for Improved Self-Regulation
Action: Sensory tools will provide students with strategies to manage emotions, reduce sensory overload, and maintain focus, supporting self-regulation throughout the school day.

3. Enhance Learning Through Hands-On Manipulatives
Action: Hands-on manipulatives will be integrated into instruction to help students understand abstract concepts through concrete, multisensory learning experiences.

4. Improve Classroom Behavior and Social Interaction
Action: A flexible, sensory-friendly classroom will promote collaboration, strengthen peer relationships, and decrease behavior challenges by fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment.

5. Advance Academic and Emotional Growth
Action: Flexible seating, sensory tools, and manipulatives will be combined to create a well-rounded classroom experience that nurtures each child’s academic progress as well as their social and emotional development. 

 

Benefits to my students

This project will directly support all 18 first-grade students in my classroom, with particular attention given to those in the lowest quartile, in alignment with my school’s improvement plan that focuses on subgroup populations. While the entire class will benefit from the flexible seating, sensory tools, and manipulatives, special emphasis will be placed on students performing below grade level (Tier 2).

By implementing these resources, I will be able to:
• Increase student engagement, focus, and on-task behavior.
• Reduce behavior disruptions caused by sensory overload or anxiety.
• Provide tools that help students build self-regulation skills.
• Foster stronger collaboration and peer relationships.
• Support academic growth through differentiated, hands-on learning.

To measure success, I will use progress monitoring tools, including behavior tracking forms to record engagement, reductions in disruptions, and growth in self-regulation. Academic progress will be assessed using small group interventions, literacy assessments, student progress reports, and standardized measures.

Ultimately, this initiative will create a more supportive, engaging, and inclusive classroom where every child has the opportunity to grow academically, socially, and emotionally. 

 

Budget Narrative

Funds from this grant will be used to purchase flexible seating options, sensory tools, and hands-on manipulatives from Amazon. These resources will be implemented in the first-grade classroom to create a supportive, student-centered environment that nurtures the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally.
